Origin Story
My first attempt to learn ballet as an adult was in 2011 with a 6 week beginner course that spent very little time teaching technique and had us falling out of pirouettes in our first class. I was dissatisfied and disappointed; I wanted to actually learn ballet from pliés up, not “play” at being a ballet dancer for an hour a week.
By 2015 I was living in Vancouver, BC and discovered a dance studio with open drop in adult ballet classes. I began to practice ballet more regularly, with teachers who treated the adult students like me more seriously. I saw a huge range of people in those drop in classes...and an equally wide range of ballet class outfits! One memorable Saturday morning a woman casually strolled into class late wearing a full-body unitard in a bold tiger stripe print and I was in awe.
It opened up so many possibilities in my mind about what dancewear means to different people, and about all the different personalities who are drawn to ballet. I began to think about what adult dancers were wearing to class, how they express themselves, and why they choose to wear what they wear.
As someone with a Fashion Design diploma, a professional background in athletic apparel, and a beginner adult ballet student myself, I began to feel that I could offer something to the adult ballet community that was growing around me. So I began working on building a new dancewear brand, Solalune.
Solalune Dancewear is committed to listening to and working to support the adult dancers in the global ballet community with the respect you deserve and the admiration that we have for you. We see you, and we want you at the barre with us.
